Benefiting Education of Girls in Nigeria (BEGIN) is a US-based non-governmental organization which aims to help young poor or underprivileged women and girls aged 4 to 25 from Northern Nigeria to have greater access to education.
It was founded in May 2017 by Dr Hussain Kasim, a Nigerian-American who works in Lagos, Nigeria.
Although BEGIN has a strong focus on helping girls with their university education, it also helps younger girls from very poor backgrounds to continue their studies from elementary school to high school and eventually to university.
BEGIN helps young women and girls by sponsoring their tuition fees or school expenses. It is funded by income from fundraising events and private donations.
To date, BEGIN has funded full scholarships for two young women. It is currently sponsoring a further six girls at various universities in Nigeria as well as helping a number of younger girls with their school-related expenses such as school books and clothing.
